New Products: Caress Evenly Gorgeous Exfoliating Body Wash and Beauty Bar

Hello everybody,<br /><br />Recently, I have an opportunity to try Caress’s new line of body care products called “Evenly Gorgeous”. This new line consists of two exfoliating products: body wash and beauty bar. So far, I only reviewed one body wash (<a href="http://mymakeupblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/obsessed-with-johnsons-softwash-gentle.html">Johnson’s Softwash</a>) and I wonder why. While I have about 3 body washes in rotation in my shower, I rarely finish any of them. It’s not because they’re not good – in fact, the reverse may be true – it’s just I’m really picky when it comes to the stuff than cleans my body. This product is an interesting mix of moisturizing karite butter, yummy burned brown sugar, and fine sandy round beady exfoliating particles. Sounds good, isn’t it?<br /><br />What got me is the smell: it is really delicious! “Burned brown sugar” is not a good description to it. This product smells like dessert with a little floral kick. It reminds me of a lighter version Mariah Carey “M” perfume without the woody notes. In fact, if Unilever decided to bottle up the scent, I’ll definitely buy. To me, dessert scented body washes are fun: you get the high of smelling it without the calories (and the guilt) of eating it. I usually hit up something like this after an intense workout. Life, all of the sudden, smells better already!<br /><br /><span id="fullpost"><br />Moisture-wise, this body wash is just right. And this is the part I’m finicky about: I absolutely detest body washes that leave my skin either too dry or too greasy. As soon as I’m closer to finding an HG body wash, it becomes a flop. Like the body wash, the bar also has engrained exfoliating particles. I’m sure it also cleans you as well as the body wash does.<br /><blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">Ingredients </span>(body wash): water, sodium laureth sulfate, polyethylene, cocamidopropyl betane, glycerin, acrylates copolymer, cocamide MEA, fragrance, glycine soja oil, Helianthus anuus seed oil, Butyrospermum parkii, molasses, maltodextrin, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, PPG-9, propylene glycol, tetrasodium EDTA, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, caramel, blue 1, iron oxides, mica, red 33, titanium dioxide, yellow 6.</blockquote>This product has good sources of moisturizers from sunflower seed oil, karite (shea) butter, soya oil, and glycerin. While this product uses sodium laureth sulfate, a common foaming ingredient, it does not use parabens as preservatives. To replace them are methylcholoroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone. In fact, Unilever phased out the use of parabens as preservatives a while ago already.<br /><br />Here are the pros and cons:<br /><ul><li><span style="font-style: italic;">Pros:</span> good exfoliating body wash, smells delicious, moisturizing.</li><li><span style="font-style: italic;">Cons:</span> not really concentrated, contains SLS – a potential skin irritant, also contains artificial exfoliating beads.</li></ul><span style="font-weight: bold;">My rating:</span> B+<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Price:</span> $3.50 for 12 oz and $4.45 for 18 oz bottles of body wash; $2.99 for 2-bar pack up to $7.99 for 8-bar pack at food, drugstore and mass retailers<br /><br />If you crave the skin quenching property of MAC Naked Honey but does not want to shell out a lot of cash, this new body wash is for you. At $3.50 per 12 oz bottle, Caress Evenly Gorgeous is a steal. Now, when I crave for some sweets, I can just simply head straight to the bathroom and take a shower!<br /><br />That's all for today, folks! Homemade Sugar Waxing Recipe

Once upon a time, I bought a jar of Nad’s and tried to remove the hair out of my legs. While Nad’s was gentle and did not irritate my skin, it did not do such a good job to depilate the unwanted hair. Here’s the how-to:<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Laura DuPriest Homemade Sugar Wax</span><br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">What you need:</span><br /><ul><li>1 cup water</li><li>2 cup sugar</li><li>2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice</li></ul><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">How to make it:</span><br /><ul><li>Combine all ingredients together in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Watch over this pan until it bubbles and start to have the color of ginger ale. </li><li>In a separate pan, boil some water.</li><li>To test the readiness of the wax mixture, use a metal spoon and scoop a spoonful of mixture. If it bubbles in the spoon for at least two seconds, the mixture is ready.</li><li>Remove the saucepan from heat and add 1 tablespoon of boiling water from the second pan and stir thoroughly. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before storing in a plastic or glass container.</li><li>To make cleaning the pan easier, pour the remaining hot water from the second pan to the first one (the one used to boil the wax) before cleaning it.</li></ul><br /><span id="fullpost"><br />Now, here’s the fun part:<span style="font-weight: bold;"> How to sugar wax</span><br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Other things you’ll need</span><br /><ul><li>Cornstarch</li><li>Cotton muslin strips or strips of paper bag cutouts</li><li>Wooden Popsicle sticks or a smooth butter knife with no serration</li><li>Two old, washable towels</li></ul>Before using this sugar mixture you just made, let it cool down totally. To use it, just heat it in the microwave for a few minutes until it get to the honey-like consistency. I’d like to have a warm water pot nearby to put the wax in so I don’t have to hobble back and forth between the bathroom and the microwave oven :)<br /><br />Then coat the part you want to wax generously with cornstarch. For example, if you want to wax your leg, just coat it until it looks snow white. Coating it with powder makes your skin less tolerable to the abrasion caused by waxing.<br /><br />Next, coat your hands with cornstarch as well and you’re ready to apply the sugar wax to your skin.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Important step:</span> apply the wax to the direction of hair growth! Then apply the strip on top of the wax, gently rub it two or three times in downward strokes. Take a deep breath and quickly pull the strip out of your leg.<br /><br />You can reuse the same strip over and over again until it’s thick with wax.<br /><br />To remove the leftover wax on your skin, use the old towels :)<br /><br />Unless you have really sensitive skin or use retinoids, sugaring is for you. This recipe can be used to remove facial hair as well. A Simple Half Updo for You

When it comes to hair, I have a lot to learn. A cute flower or a tiara can replace the headband if you’re into that kind of thing. This look is suitable for parties or even weddings.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">How to get this style:</span><br /><ul><li>Before blow-drying my hair, I sleeked a dollop of hair gel to my damp hair. I used Le Baby hair gel for this experimentation. Then, I just blow-dry it as usual.</li><li>After my hair was dry, I sectioned and rolled them with the sponge hair rollers because I did not want to use any more heat on my hair. If you have the heated hair rollers, please feel free to use it as it speeds up the process a lot more.<br /></li></ul><ul><li>After watching about 2 episodes of CSI, I took out the sponge rollers, flipped my hair upside down, and sprayed the fresh curls with a generous amount of hairspray. Then, I flipped my hair back up and spray more hairspray on top. This will keep the curls lasting a lot longer.</li><li>I arbitrarily sectioned the hair into two uneven parts; then grabbed the top part near the nape of my neck and twisted it upward in one turn. I quickly snap the butterfly clip on the twist and let go. If I were to do it again, I would:<br /><ul><li>Get a better-looking hair clip: this clip was what I had nearby so I used it. There are other beautiful butterfly clips out there and I will get one.</li><li>Use pins instead of clips, then add a flower: this will look great for a bridal look. On top of that, you can do it by yourself.</li><li>Use a strand of pearls instead of a headband: it will look really dreamy and bridal-y :)</li><li>Or just forgo the headband all together and put a flower on my hair instead.</li></ul>That’s all, folks! I’ve been secretly loving her channel and watching her doing makeup is a joy. She has a way to create very doable but gorgeous looks and most times, I can recreate them. After watching it, I was so revved up that I started searching for some similar colors.<br /><br />Then came <a href="http://draft.blogger.com/www.archetypecosmetics.com">Archetype cosmetics</a> <a href="http://mymakeupblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/archetype-cosmetics-pigments-part-1.html">pigment samples</a>. I really cherish them and rarely touch them at all. After waiting about 45 days for them to come, I’d better be careful. I chose Daybreak Aeval and Verre de Soie. While I’ve used Verre de Soie before, this was the first time I tried Daybreak Aeval and loved every single minute of it. Archetype cosmetics pigments are outstandingly gorgeous and really pigmented. I used Stormy on my outer V and slightly blended it into my crease. I used the leftover pigments to apply on the lower lash line. To highlight, I used Boom and slightly blend it downward. Then, to accent the inner corner of the eyes, I applied Verre de Soie.<br /><br />I used the Sephora faux lashes after applying mascara. In my wardrobe, I have some few pieces that I’ve worn over and over again. The sad part it, after a while, everything just look the same while I have little aspiration to improve my wardrobe. In a sense, I’m glad not to be a fashion fanatic because clothes cost a lot more money than makeup and they tend to go in and out of style pretty fast.<br /><br />While reading “Natural Beauty” by Laura DuPriest, I noticed a guide on how to build one’s wardrobe that is quite intriguing. While other people take notes, I blog. And these are my findings on sources of fashion trends:<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">1. Fashion ads:</span><br /><br />According to Laura, fashion ads are great to study trends because they are manufactured to sell products. Although they may push to the extremes, they offer keywords to apply to the real world scenarios. For example, if you read an ad that said something about “chunky heels”, you know it’s in, although the models in the ads may look like they’re wearing bricks instead of shoes.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">2. Magazine editorials:</span><br /><br />Magazine editorials are what intimidate me: the clothes are too expensive, the models are too thin, and the styles are too strange. Don’t get me wrong: I love colors. However, I know my limitations and a skimpy jumper on a size 00 model does not look good on good ole me!<br /><br />Laura’s guide to reading fashion editorials helps me to decipher the messages from these meticulously and beautifully constructed fashion stories. Here are the points we need to notice when reading editorials:<br /><br />1. Length of hemlines in skirts and dresses<br />2. Cut of pants: bell-bottoms, slimmed, straight legs, etc<br />3. Color statement: what colors are in for the season<br />4. Patterns: solids or prints<br />5. Shoe silhouette: slim or chunky heels, round or pointed toes<br />6. Accessories: splashes of colors, metallic, or classic<br />7. Fabrics: textured and heavy, or smooth and flowing<br /><br /><span id="fullpost"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">3. Fashion weeks:</span><br /><br />Although Laura did not include it in her book, I think fashion weeks (New York, Paris, Milan, London, etc) contribute a lot to the outlook of fashion. The thing about the shows on fashion weeks is they are arts and do not meant to wear as is in real life. They need to be interpreted with the same criteria as in fashion editorials.<br /><br />Once you learn how to decipher the clothes from editorials and shows, it’s time to build your wardrobe. Laura advised to gather fashion magazines and tear out the looks you are interested to make a “look book”. Then, you can take the look book to the mall and select your clothes for the season.<br /><br />It’s so simple, yet I’ve never read it in any fashion magazines! Just for this part only, “Natural Beauty” has its price worth. Laura also mentioned TV shows, movie characters, news/talk show hosts, soap opera characters, and celebrities as fashion influences. We all know how celebrities shake up our lives but rarely do we realize the fashion power of the other parts of the world. If you notice, Oprah always wear the most flattering pants to her while Tyra is the walking billboard of what’s going on in fashion.<br /><br />Laura also touches base on how to be well dressed without breaking the bank: to buy fewer but better quality pieces of clothing. I remember reading one interview on George Clooney where he said to wear the same tuxedo for 15 years whenever he walked the red carpet! Well, George, I got a pair of dress shoes that’s kicking its fifth year and still doing fine, too! As soon as I followed that philosophy, my wardrobe no longer clutters with clothes I do not wear. And I’m much happier since I do not need to spend a lot of time finding my clothes!<br /><br />That’s all, folks! Secret Charm: a New Scent from Victoria's Secret

However, it was a blessing in disguise: any perfume that smelled too noxious could be quickly eliminated. My head would have spun out of control after one whiff! The Garden collection, besides being unbelievably affordable, have uncomplicated perfumes. When a bottle of 1 oz. EDT is sold at $9.50, you don’t expect much from it. Give or take, this collection has some really wonderful gems that I’ve cherished for years such as Amber Romance (an amber-vanilla scent), My Desire (a rose scent), and Endless Love (an apple blossom-honey dew-ylang ylang scent).<br /><br />Although perfumes are personal choices, I believe if VS launched this scent in Japan, it could have gone really big. With their beauty philosophy linked with water, this scent is very suitable for the Japanese market. To me, although described as amalgamate of honey suckle, Gala apple, and Stephanotis, Secret Charm smells like water! At first, I sprayed Secret Charm body mist to my arm and it did not smell like anything. The body mist, being a weakest juice in the perfume hierarchy, failed to provide enough scents. I asked the sales associate if she thought the EDT would be stronger and she said yes. And I was happy to get my birthday gift, as well!<br /><span id="fullpost"><br />When I came home, I immediately gave this new scent a try and the sales lady was right: the EDT does smell stronger. However, it is still a very light scent. The correct description should be “whispery soft”. I can’t help but connect Secret Charm to L’Eau D’Issey by Issey Miyake, the Japanese perfume. Out of curiosity, I sprayed Secret Charm on one arm and L’Eau D’Issey to another. Although I still can tell them apart, these scents are pretty close to each other, like sisters. While L’Eau D’Issey started out with jasmine note and calmed down to water notes, Secret Charm is the reverse. It started out smelling like water but as time progressed, the Gala apple and honey suckle notes opened up. However, the apple note is quite subtle. I only recognized it because I wore an apple note perfume when I was a child. That kind of note can’t get out of my head, by the way. It’s quite interesting and if done right, can smell amazing - not cheesy.<br /><br />Overall, I like Secret Charm more than most fragrances from Victoria's Secret Garden collection. I get tired of perfumes pretty fast: after 3 days, a perfume becomes old to me. It either gives me a headache or I simply lose interest. I’ve been wearing Secret Charm a lot last week and so far I still want more of it. I guess the lightness and watery property of this perfume really get into me. This perfume is a surprise to me as I am not really into watery scents. I guess it really has its own charm: the only way somebody to smell it on you is to be really close to you.
