New Mineral Cosmetic Company: Pink Blossom Cosmetics

Hi everyone,<br /><br />In February, Lilly Yang, the owner of <a href="http://pinkblossomcosmetics.storenvy.com/">Pink Blossom Cosmetics</a>, contacted me and asked me if I wanted to review some products from her mineral makeup line. As a mineral makeup lover, I jumped into the bandwagon and after some emails, Lilly sent me a package to Vietnam! I appreciate that she took a risk to send her products because at that time, Pink Blossom Cosmetics only served domestic customers. Lucky for us, the transition time was short and I received the package about 2 weeks later.<br /><br />Lilly was generous to send me 4 full-size eye shadows and 2 samples in clam shells. It's a matte brown color that can be used as an eyeliner and eye shadow. You only need to use a tiny bit of it as it is extremely pigmented</li><li><b>Chocolate-tier:</b> this is a shimmering brown eye shadow with a touch of taupe. At first, I thought it would be darker than Chocolate Brown but it is actually lighter and sheerer.</li><li><b>Sultry Taupe:</b> I wanted to try a taupe color as I pretty much don't have a lot of luck with it. However, Sultry Taupe does not have a lot of purple as it veers more toward pink and brown. It is shimmery and sheer like Chocolate-tier and reminds me a lot of MAC Shroom and Stila Kitten. In fact, it might be a darker cousin of the later one.</li><li><b>Pink Blossom</b>: this is a color I specifically request since it is a multi-use pigment. I tried it as a lip, eye, and cheek color and it worked well. This is a shimmery hot pink pigment and like the other ones with the same texture, it is sheer but has stronger pigmentation than the other two.</li><li><b>Jaded Away</b>: is is a light green pigment with yellow shimmer. I was interested in colorful pigments to try at this was one that I like. It is very flattering and not so colorful since it is not a loud color. Like Pink Blossom, I like that it has more pigmentation than the neutral colors I tried.</li><li>Shimmering Sapphire: while it looked dark and shimmery, Shimmering Sapphire is a matte dark blue pigment with micro-glitters so fine that you almost don't feel it. It reminds me of MAC Flashtrack.</li></ul><br />The biggest surprise I got out of these pigments is its clinging power. Then, I washed it with water and still saw some residues. Only after I washed the swatch with soap that the colors completely went away. To those who are afraid that mineral makeup might bleed or migrate, fear no more. The pigments from Pink Blossom Cosmetics did not budge when I wore them.<br /><br />The ingredients are labelled in each jar or pod and if it is not lip safe, it would be stated so there. Also, the ingredients are pretty straightforward (mica, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate for more binding power.) Out of six, only Pink Blossom and Chocolate Brown are safe to use everywhere on the face where the other four are not lip safe. These pigments do not contain dyes or bismuth oxychoride, which makes my skin itch.<br /><br />While it's nice that Lilly offered generous size and relatively inexpensive samples, I do find the clam shells to be hard to close. When I close them, pigments that are around the rim tend to fly out. Also, when I open them, I have to be careful not to overextend the halves of the shells so I don't lose pigments, either.<br /><br />I'm so thankful that I got a chance to review this new mineral makeup company. Last Friday Night FOTD

I remember some of my cousins used to rock those perms with sky-high bangs. Remember them? Good times :)<br /><br />With the aide of my trusted Urban Decay Book of Shadows III, I recreated the look. Turns out it's not so difficult. A Super-Duper Easy FOTD

Video: How to Create a Unique Nail Polish with Mineral Pigments

Today's post is special: this is My Makeup Blog's first video clip! I filmed it a while ago when my hair was still long. This video clip is going to show you how to create a unique nail polish using mineral pigments. That way, you can have an extra use of your own pigments to create some very unique shades. My current laptop did not have Windows Movie Maker installed when I bought it and it was available for downloading yesterday. I filmed this video clip from the webcam of my laptop, hence the Blair Witch quality.<br /><br />Jump for the written instruction and more!<br /><a name="more"></a>For those need the written instruction, here it is:<br /><br /><b>You'll need:</b><br /><br /><ul><li>A base coat: I used Avon Nail Expert Lasting Lengths lacquer in the video. I no longer use it because my bottle is really old. However, it is a good base coat. I highly recommend it. The reason for a base coat is to help your pigments bond better. Also, it prevents your nails from staining.</li><li>A clear top coat: I used Rimmel London top coat. Also, I don't use it anymore. I replaced it with Rimmel London Faster 60 seconds top coat since this one dries faster. Rimmel London makes some really fantastic top coats that are shiny.</li><li>Some pigments: I used "Cookie Monster" and poured a bit out to a piece of wax paper. Regular paper or foil would do, too. I would not recommend dipping the nail polish brush straight into the pigment jar, though. Treat your pigments with care.</li></ul><div><b>How to do it:</b></div><div><ul><li>Apply a coat of base coat and wait to dry</li><li>Dip the top coat polish brush into the pigments in the wax paper, then proceed to painting your nail as if using regular nail polish. use more pigments and/or top coat if needed.</li><li>Re-apply a second coat if needed.</li><li>To finish off, apply a fast-dry top coat (not shown in the video.) That's it, you're done!</li></ul><div>I find putting a dot of top coat on the wax paper helps accelerating the process. Also, you can mix a bit of top coat and pigment together before applying. However, you need to work fast before the nail polish mixture dries. Another alternative is to add some pigments directly to the clear top coat. You can make a whole bunch of nail polishes this way and they can last forever, as long as you cap them properly. In fact, the founders of Urban Decay started their companies from mixing nail polishes with pigments for their own use.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>The only caveat I have with this method is the chunkiness of the nail polish. Mineral pigments are lovely but they don't mix as well as dyes. If you are used to Zoya, the nail polishes created by the above method has the same texture as Zoya glittery nail polishes, which is not so bad I reckon.</div><div><br /></div><div>I am so happy that I got a chance to edit this video. Custom Blend Foundation at Formula D Minerals

Selling mineral foundation is a lot of work as they are not fast selling items. Also, making mineral foundation is messy and requires a lot of tweaking to make it look right. A bit of tweaking and blending here and there and finally, I was done. The foundation is around the neighborhood of NC35 and I was lucky enough to have a jar with a resealable sifter available. It's very convenient because you can close the holes of the powder jar after using and just pop the powder in the bag. In the past, whenever I traveled, I had to pack a roll of scotch tape to seal off the holes. This just takes the pressure off. Also, depending on how wide you open the sifter, you can actually control the amount of material pouring out. How come there is so much space between the foundation and the sifter? That doesn't make sense to me. Although you don't see it, I have quite a lot of nasty scars and acne bumps around my chin. This foundation manages to cover them all up while making my skin look quite natural.<br /><br />So yes, I count this as a success. Foundation-wise, I haven't bought any of them- mineral or liquid- since even before I started my shop. If you go through my previous FOTDs since April, you will see I have been wearing various shades of Formula D Minerals foundation. Even in the scorching temperature of the South, I manage to look good, all thanks to my own foundation.  If you want to try my foundation, please leave a private message to my store on Etsy and we'll take it from here. Smoke Out FOTD

Hello everybody,<br /><br />The weather has been so hot and humid lately. I feel like melting all the time. However, it does not stop me from doing a smokey eyes look. I blame my friend M for it. She showed up in one of our writing workshops with a Wet n Wild black eye and body liner stick and a black lipstick. They were from last Halloween's collection and Publix put them on sale for a quarter each. By the time I got there to search for them, only the stick was available. I got a sample from Sephora, now opened inside a JCPenney in my hood. I was impressed at the list of ingredients and the fact that it doesn't have silicone or dimethicone (my face's archenemy.) While it does not give me any zits, the holding power is not that superior. You can see how greasy my face look after some time. It would probably work in the wintertime. But for the extreme Southern summer heat and humidity, this primer does not hold up so well.<br /><br />Also, please don't buy that concealer! It's evil! It enhanced the uneven texture underneath my eyes like I've never seen before.
