Beauty Literature: Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin

Hi there, everybody!<br /><br />Although I’ve loved makeup for many years and read as many makeup/beauty books, I do not own that many of them. The truth is trends come and go, products ebb and flow, but techniques never change. Kevyn Aucoin (1962-2002) during his short life on Earth contributed to makeup in a way that shaped how we look today. Cher said, “Kevie isn’t a makeup man, he’s a magician. Or better yet, go to Amazon.com and buy it! I bought mine without knowing what’s on the inside, which was quite a gamble. To these days, I also think it’s one of the best books I have ever bought.<br /><br />“Making Faces” is a stunning book: it was published in 1997 when Photoshop was in its nascent state and digital photography probably was not even born. Yet, all the photos in the books are huge, gorgeous and flawless. That only means one thing: the makeup was good so touch ups were minimal. Kevyn took most of the pictures himself while the rest of them were taken by famed photographers (Patrick DeMarchelier is one of them.)<br /><br />The book is divided into three parts: basic techniques, makeovers done on regular people, and transformations on celebrities. The first part called “Making the Face” is about the basics of makeup. They are covered thoroughly but enough not to tire out the readers. I did not learn how to do a proper smokey-eyed look until I got this book. Before that, doing smokey eyes were like having gambles: sometimes they came out right, most times they came out like I just got punched. His techniques are simple and he drew the steps by hands. (I guess this was before digital photography and blogging so drawing was an easier option.) Kevyn Aucoin was a self-taught makeup artist who used to do makeovers on his sister Carla when he was a boy. In this section, he included people from different backgrounds and colors. Then he spread his magic on them and transformed them to beautiful, almost fairy tale-like ladies. I am at awe on how simple the makeup is, yet how flawless and shiny these lucky people looked after the makeovers. There was even one transformation for a guy and he looked about 5 years younger after some powder and concealer.<br /><br />The last part of “Making Faces” is titled “Great Looks” where Kevyn brought together some makeup styles done on celebrities. These looks are timeless and look high fashion. In fact, they are so gorgeous that they can still be in Vogue style editorials. In some of the looks, I found myself muttering something along the line of “this is so MAC this season!” several times. But “Making Faces” was written 12 years ago! To them, it is hard to follow and I do not see why. The directions and illustrations were done in a studious manner and if you read carefully, you will get them. However, Kevyn wrote his book without mentioning any brand names, which may frustrate somebody who wants to know if it’s a MAC Sable or Munch to use when it comes to a “dark brown powder eyeshadow”. To me, that is freedom. By not mentioning any brands, he allowed you to use whatever you want or have without limiting yourself to a certain number of products. Also, people tend to use the pictures as their rigid final point after finishing a look. This is a huge mistake because (a) you are not the model, (b) you do not have Kevyn to do your makeup, and (c) you do not have a team of half dozen of people to cater to you and take your pictures. So no, you are not going to look like Janet Jackson/Vanessa Williams/Cher/Nadja Auermann/Kate Moss. You are going to look like you, but a whole lot better.<br /><br />Which leads to this point: makeup is about enhancing your natural beauty, not making you look like others. If your goal is to achieve the later, how boring this world will be when everybody looks alike?<br /><br />With all that said, “Making Faces” is a valuable book for everybody who has interests in makeup artistry. It will empower you and take you to the next level. Also, it makes a beautiful coffee table book. StudioTools Dual-Finish Brush: Now, If I Had Two Dollars…

Hi everybody,<br /><br />My name is Dao and I am a brush hoarder. Although I do not want to milk the cow dry, I did not feel happy after I got sick. To cheer me up, I went to Target (my neighbor) for a walk. In fact, I would walk anywhere that have AC but places like that tend to want to sell me something. Target is a wonderful place to be and I can spend endless hours walking around and looking for stuff. My excuse is “I’m a beauty blogger, I need to do my research!”<br /><br />Usually, the house of Tarjé in the neighborhood is slow in stocking up new stuff. When everybody in the net has already touched Sonia Kashuk highlighting brush at their local Target, I did not see them in store until very recently. The above-mentioned brush is a dual fiber (or fiber optic, skunk) brush that is similar to the legendary MAC 187 that I’ve been lemming for so long. After I saw the presence of SK highlighting brush, I squealed and made a dance right in the beauty section. (Thank goodness nobody was there, otherwise it would have been embarrassing!)<br /><br />Now, here’s the money part:<br />MAC 187: $42<br />Sonia Kashuk highlighting brush: $12.99<br /><br />A lot better, right? To be honest, the SK brush is really soft and big. It is not as dense as a 187 and since I was not comfortable with its ability to stipple liquid foundation, I did not buy it. Then I tottered around to touch them ecoTOOLs brushes, which Target carries the full line. And I just wished right then and there to get a cheaper skunk brush that I can stipple liquid foundation with.<br /><br />And then I went on with my air-conditioned indoor walk to the other side of the store. Later on, I went back to the beauty section to look for the new NYC nail polishes but Target no longer carried NYC. In fact, my first eyeshadow brushes were from them. For those who are not aware of this brand, StudioTools is Target’s store brand of makeup tools. They are super cheap ($1.99 to $2.49 per item) and I guess Target was the first store to have makeup tools available. The brushes are not as soft as Sonia Kashuk’s but they do their job and last for a long time. Mine still work, although I do not use them as much since I have some better brushes.<br /><br />This dual fiber brush is different from the original 187: the bristles are made of synthetic fibers, not a blend of animal hair (black fiber) and synthetic material (pointy white fiber.) Also, the StudioTools rendition is not as soft (and I don’t expect it to be since it only costs a dollar and ninety-nine cents!)<br /><br />However, the advantage of this brush is it is super full. The black and white fibers are packed densely enough to keep the brush sturdy. This brush is not one of those willy-nilly 187 dupes out there that are too flimsy to stipple. Also, the white fibers are shorter than in the 187, which make it better as a stippling brush. For those who look for a synthetic skunk brush for their liquid foundation, this is an excellent candidate. The people at StudioTools figured everything right, and they price it very right as well. After some couple of washes, it became fuller and got softer as well. It did not shed even a strand, and also did not bleed. This brush did not smell bad when I bought it. Also, it’s easier to wash.<br /><br />Beside not being the softest brush on earth, it is kind of heavy. Since the handle is made of opaque plastic, it constitutes to the weigh of the brush. However, a thicker handle can be a good thing: it allows firmer applications when you use liquid products. Although this is a two-dollar brush with a plastic handle, it does not look cheap. In fact, it’s quite good looking.<br /><br />So, let’s redo the math here, shall we?<br /><br />MAC 187: $42;<br />Sonia Kashuk highlighting brush: $12.99;<br />StudioTools Dual-Fiber brush: $1.99.<br /><br />With the money to buy a MAC 187 brush, you can get 21 StudioTools stippling brushes and still have 21 cents left! And then, you can go around acting like Oprah: “You get a free brush, you get a free brush, you get a free brush!” However, as I mentioned before, this brush is not the 187 but it comes very close. Of all the 187 dupes I’ve seen so far, this one does a decent job to stipple in foundation. It also does a good job with powders. And don’t worry; it gets softer after each wash.<br /><br />Note: Not a long time ago, Everyday Minerals released their version of the skunk brush called Unskunk Foptic brush at $10. It was a built-up suspense since EDM announced their launch of an all-synthetic skunk brush. However, from what I’ve seen, that brush is really flimsy and does not stipple well. I’m just appalled of how it happened as EDM has the baddest flat top brush in the world. Although yours truly never went to proms in her life (because there was/is no such thing as a prom in her motherland), I guess a prom is like a party with a younger crowd, more colorful clothing, and no alcohol.<br /><br />Now, this is a challenge but I think I can do it!<br /><br />First of all, a smokey-eyed look can go well with everything. A matte brown eyeshadow also works just fine.<br /><br />The tip is to start at the highest point (the arch) of the eyebrow and use short strokes to fill to the end of your brow. Then, without picking any more powder, go from the beginning of your brow to the arch. Then I apply my foundation with a stippling brush for liquid, and a kabuki brush for mineral. Make sure to blend well so the foundation does not look streaky in pictures. If you have blemishes and dark circles, please use some concealer on them.<br /><br />Then I set my foundation with powder: yellow tint powder looks best as it brightens my face. Also, powder helps to control oil and keep foundation from melting away.<br /><br />After that, I apply blush to the apple of my cheeks using a peach-tan color and a stippling brush. Then before prom day, pack your prom makeup together so you don’t feel panic on your big day.</li><li>In your purse, you should have a pack of blotting paper, lipgloss or lipstick to reapply, a small mirror, and blush stick or paper. If you do not have blush stick or paper, just swipe some blush to several cotton pads and wrap them in a piece of saran wrap. That way, you can fix up your face quickly without busting your purse.</li><li>Have fun: no amount of makeup can replace a smiley face so say cheese!</li><li>Make memories: take pictures with your friends and enjoy prom night with them.</li><li>Act responsibly: I don’t want to sound like your mom but please don’t drink alcohol! Eyeko Face Off Cleansing Wipes: Cute and Toteable!

Reviewing products is a love-hate relationship: you get the joy of exploring a new product but after too many reviews later, you start to question the sincerity and validity of your own words. They gave me some of their uber cute Eyeko Face Off Cleansing Wipes and although I was very curious, I did not want to crack open a pack of wipe. But I had to be brave and do it for y’alls. It is actually softer than MAC wipes and way softer than EDM wipes that I have. The size of an Eyeko wipe is about 2/3 of a MAC wipe and packed neatly inside an individual pack. For those who travel frequently in short trips, stashing some Eyeko wipes with you is actually a good thing so you don’t have to bring anything back home. Also, with these wipes, you dodge the liquid container regulation at the airport. You can bring a whole lot of ‘em without fear of having your liquid makeup remover thrown away.<br /><br />The wipe is gentle and removes (almost) everything on my face. The first time I used, it removed most makeup but I felt like needing a second wipe to finish the job since the size of the Eyeko wipe is small. The second time around, I did not have as much makeup on so one wipe was sufficient. But using these once in an emergency while is ok, I guess;</li><li>The price: it ain’t cheap if you calculate per-unit price (5 pounds for 20 wipes, that's 25 pence per wipe, or 40 cents in US currency!) . I would not use Eyeko wipes by itself but to have some in the bag for the rainy days, it’s alright.</li></ul><br />So, would I buy it? Probably, but don’t quote me on this.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Rating: </span>B/ B+, it does the job but per-item price and packaging kind of kills the mood. Doing a Makeup “Me-Drag”

Hi everybody,<br /><br />June is here, finally! The weather is getting a lot warmer and I guess it's time to come clean with what type of makeup I really wear these days. I ran into this concept recently, after reading a book (see my previous post for the book list):<br /><blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">Me-Drag:</span> What someone might put on if they were dressing up as you – for Halloween, say, or some sort of roast. It is not an easy task but you’ll know it once you get there.<br /><br />The signs of having a me-drag are:<br /><ul><li>Buying similar (or same) color items over and over again: to me, they are pink and tawny blushes, neutral eye shadows, and pale pink lip glosses. I swear to have a whole bunch of them in my makeup bag and I have to rotate them.</li><li>Finding yourself doing the same makeup look using different similar color items: there are many ways to wear neutrals, you know!</li><li>Friends and family members no longer winch at your makeup: they simply just see you as who you are, with or without makeup.</li></ul>My goal of a makeup me-drag is to look like myself, but better. In fact, it’s every woman’s goal (and that’s why we <3 id="fullpost"><br />To be honest, I am not a fan of the natural look. How can looking natural requires much more work than looking colorful and somewhat fake? That question I still cannot answer (and that’s why Bobbi Brown and her matte, neutral makeup is so popular!) So I make an effort to look like I have some makeup on although they are really minimal. Most times I do not wear foundation, even when my skin is not that good.<br /><span id="fullpost"><br />My whole me-drag routine includes:</span><br /><ul><li><span id="fullpost">A clean face and some lotion with SPF: moist skin looks a lot better. To me that’s half a battle won right there;</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">>A soft and shimmery pink-lavender-mauve eyeshadow: I find this shade really opens up my eyes. My favorite are Taffy by Hard Candy, Adorable and Dynamic by <a href="http://www.adornedwithgracebeauty.com/">Adorned with Grace minerals</a>. Dynamic is my new love and it’s an LE item so get it while it’s still hot;</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">Some mascara and thin lines of eyeliner;</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">Depending on the situation, foundation. I mostly skip this step.</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">Powder: to control oil and even my skin a bit.
