90210 Is Strangely High School

It wasn't particularly boring but we didn't exactly love it. Throughout the show, something felt off to us, something we couldn't really name until it suddenly occured to us that the show felt SO high school! </span></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:85%;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:85%;">The show is about high school, you say, so obviously it's supposed to feel high school. But the characters in the past few 'high school' dramas that I've watched have been so un-high-school, 90210's characters and enviornment seemed relatively young and teensy. Think back: While <strong>The OC </strong>was also about spoilt kids who go to a rich, Californian school, Marissa (Mischa Barton) and Summer (Rachel Bilson) seemed to deal with more non-school-related issues and the only time we see them at school was to see them talk by their lockers. <strong>Veronica Mars</strong><em> </em>was so mature and smart that I never really thought of her as a dumb teenager. As for <strong>Gossip Girl</strong>, Blair, Serena and sometimes even Jenny seem so worldly and glamorous that it just doesn't seem like normal high school to us. </span></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:85%;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:85%;">So watching the kids on 90210 actually doing high school things like playing lacrose, messing up the rival school, copying a friend's homework, being grounded, participating in school plays and boys beating each other up. Obviously high school's not supposed to be sophisticated but we're just not used to it! As you can see from her ugly outfit here, she's no Marissa Cooper. Silver looks so cool with a simple ballerina-looking American Apparel dress with long necklaces. I'm looking foward to more of Silver's outfits! </span></div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;font-size:85%;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:85%;">So you can obviously tell I am not impressed with the girls' outfits -but that is one of the things that is making this show seem so 'high school' to me. NYX Haul, Part 1: Eye Shadows

Last month I decided to get some products from NYX (pronounced /<span style="font-style: italic;">niks</span>/) because I was curious of this company. Since I started blog hopping, a lot of beauty bloggers have been raving about NYX, some of whom including Pursebuzz and Enkore, who are hardcore MAC fans. I can't help but wonder what makes this company so great that everybody's talking about it? What took me so long to get my hands on some NYX is my town does not sell products from NYX, which you can normally find at Ulta and other drugstores. I was tempted to place an order at Cherry Culture but they increased the price and I wanted the best bang for my bucks. After some research, I found out <a href="http://www.nonpareilboutique.com/">Nonpareil Boutique</a> is the place to buy. They shipped my order very fast and bubble wrapped everything! These guys are really affordable at $5.75 USD/set at Nonpareil Boutique. They look like MAC eye shadows, aren't they? In fact, they are as pigmented as MAC's but a lot softer in texture. Hence, they are better for blending. The ones I bought are in the new packages with eyeshadows textured to look like little pillows (at least to me!) The old ones just have flat surfaces. Like the trios, these eyeshadows are really pigmented and blends very well. It's an excellent all-over eyelid color or highlighter. You've got to get it if you want to try NYX.</li><li>Morocco took my breath away when I looked at it online. This color is the hue of ink when I used fountain pen back when I was a kid. The color is purple-blue if it makes sense to you.</li><li>Oro reminds me a lot of Cash Flow paint pot as it is a dirty gold color. Very pretty to use on its own if you want a sheer wash of color.</li></ul>I only bought 1 <span style="font-weight: bold;">NYX chrome eyeshadow</span> in Nymph to try since I have a lot of pigments already. The chrome eyeshadows are loose powder packed in square jars. Each jar is weighed 2 grams of very fine powder, much finer than MAC pigments. Nonpareil boutique sells them at $3.85 USD a piece, the same price as a single NYX eyeshadow. Nonpareil boutique put it on sale at $1.25 USD and it is a steal. The reason I do not have pictures for them is I already pour the pigments out of the original containers to the pigment jars. They are very fine pigments with great color payoff. The amount is roughly about 1/2 of MAC pigment jar. I really love them and want to collect all of the pearl mania one day.<br /><br />I can't review eyeshadows without a swatch, can I? Of course not! Does Wet n' Wild Mega Glo Look Familiar to You?

On my latest drugstore expedition at Walgreens, Wet n' Wild had a buy one get one sale. I have to admit until that moment, I did not own anything made from this company. All I remember about it was the very bright fuchsia lipsticks my mom used to wear in the 80s from Wet n' Wild. That color was smashing and awesome, plus my mom really rocked the 80s with style. As I saw the sale, my "hunter-gatherer" instinct arose and I immediately plucked two items out of the rack. The only difference is Cargo Beach Blush is in a tin while Mega Glo is in a plastic container. Oh, and the price: Beach Blush is $26 USD/ 32 CDN while Mega Glo is $3.99 USD at Walgreens!<br /><br />As I mentioned earlier, I thought the drugstore version would not perform well. After all, it's less than 5 dollars and I do not blame it. However, Mega Glo delivers very well as a blush, highlighter, and eyeshadow palette! The powder is very finely milled which is rare for a drugstore product and as smooth as silk. The pigmentation is good and it has 4 colors to be used together as a blush or separately as blushes, highlighter, and contouring color/bronzer. This palette is good for 5 dollars and I found it performs much better without an eye primer (paint pot). The colors are pigmented and long lasting. If you want to lose weight the way I did, just substitute meat with vegetable proteins like tofu and beans. I swear I eat like crazy while losing weight. My Trip to Target: Jemma Kidd, NP Set, and Pixi

Last week my friend Van asked me if I tried Jemma Kidd and NP Set from Target yet and it set me to an impromptu trip to the House of Tarjei to find out about these new brands. It turned out to be an interesting trip with me, myself, and a camera.<br /><br />On Saturday of the Labor Day weekend, I set my foot out to the wild wild world and head straight to Target. Since the camera function in my cellphone <s>sucks</s> does not perform the way I wanted, I had to drag with me the not-so-perfect camera to the store, hiding it in my bag. In my mind, I prepared if Target security guards caught me then I would just snapped as many pictures as I could and ran for my life. Doing that may risk my chances to shop at Target afterward and you know I *heart* Target very much.<br /><br />Within last week Target introduced 3 makeup brands to its stores: JK Jemma Kidd, NP Set, and Pixi. Now, Pixi has already been sold at Sephora for a while, their products at Target are the same as at Sephora, and so are the prices. NP Set probably is a more affordable line from Napoleon Perdis, whose products are on sale right now at Sephora. From what I heard, Mr. Perdis is a famous Australian makeup artist whose foundation has been rave at the Down Under. However, Sephora chose not to sell his products anymore and he probably needs a new place. Plus Target provides Q-tips and tissues for customers to use on testers, the first in drugstore makeup history. I snapped as many pictures as I could and swatched as many colors as I could at the same time while watching for security guards. I bet some shoppers thought I was insane or something.<br /><br />I was very impressed with the pigmentation of JK Jemma Kidd's products. I swatched some eyeshadow colors and these colors are very hip, bright, and cheerful. The pigmentation is great. Jemma Kidd is the sister of supermodel Judie Kidd. She was a model herself until she found out her passion as a makeup artist. Currently she is the owner of the London Makeup School and also a countess. That's $3.50 more than a MAC eye shadow. That's ridiculously overpriced for something sold at Target! I also tried a color adaptable lip gloss and it turned my lips into the most fuschia color I've ever seen in my life! However, the brushes in the set are not versatile enough to be used everyday.</span><br /><span id="fullpost"><br /></span><br /><span id="fullpost"><span style="font-style: italic;">My bottom line:</span></span><br /><ul><li><span id="fullpost">The good: the brush set ($35 USD) is soft and the mini kabuki brush is very cute!</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">The bad: that color adaptable lip gloss I tried. Please do not even think of trying it in store, the color is really horrendous!</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">The ugly: the price! $18 USD per eyeshadow, are you kidding me Jemma Kidd?</span></li></ul><span id="fullpost">Collection #2: <span style="font-weight: bold;">NP Set</span></span><br /><span id="fullpost"><br /></span><br /><span id="fullpost">Compared to JK Jemma Kidd and Pixi, NP Set's collection is much paler in term of color and quantity. Also, they blended well on my skin. Compared to the Napoleon Perdis line sold at Sephora, the price of NP Set is about half, which sets it around $15-30 USD neighborhood per product. I tested the foundation primer a little bit and was not so happy with it: my skin did not feel smoother after being primed and the primer is sparkly. However, at $28 USD per duo, I felt like being robbed. Did Napoleon Perdis know that Victoria's Secret sells their <a href="http://mymakeupblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/victorias-secret-loot.html">Beauty Rush eyeshadows</a> at 5 for $20 USD?</span><br /><span id="fullpost"><br /></span><br /><span id="fullpost"><span style="font-style: italic;">My bottom line:</span></span><br /><ul><li><span id="fullpost">The good: the foundation that is very finely milled and blends well.</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">The bad: the foundation primer which has shimmers and the brush set that is poorly made.</span></li><li><span id="fullpost">The ugly: the price of those loose shadow duos is insane!</span></li></ul><span id="fullpost">Last stop: <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pixi</span></span><br /><span id="fullpost"><br /></span><br /><span id="fullpost">Perhaps Pixi is my most favorite line out of the three. It has enough colors to satisfy those color cravers like myself while maintaining reasonable prices. On top of that, their products are well-pigmented and more practical to use. Iman cosmetics, I will miss you and your very pigmented eyeshadows! Also, Almay got its second class citizen status when the whole line is moved to the location between the sale bin and NYC! FW08: Leather Jackets

On the bright side, we can now officially focus on our FW08 wardrobe! And the beauty of fall is that you can experiment with different FW outfits without worrying about the snow and freezing to death- yet. I got to find that leather jacket. Urban Outfitters has this simple one (left) with ribbed trims and Vanessa Bruno Athe has this classic asymmetrical zippered one (right) which I especially love because it looks cute with this black dress (which I have a very very similar one of!) and it'll look very cool with just jeans. The ribs make them less rock and more toned down and sporty, which is great if you want a softer look. Although I'm not sure about these two. It's usually hard to tell quality with leather until you <span style="font-style: italic;">feel</span> it, but from the LOOKS of these... they don't look of very good quality. Thus I have my eye on this Aqua leather jacket I tried on the other day. The quality is not bad and it fits quite snug and well, with a bit of a crop. For $298, I thought it was priced reasonably, in the mid range of the worst and the best. Leather jackets are expensive things after all. Unfortunately, my bargain hunting instincts wouldn't let me buy it until it is at least on some kind of tiny sale. New F/W08 Layout

<span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:85%;">Today is the 1st of September, so per tradition of this blog, it's time for the new header image! Since this season is all about the new, more mature silhouette, we decided to just show the shape of the runway model (from Proenza Schouler F/W08 show) instead of showing the original image of the outfit. Plus, we love how you can use your imagination and substitute yourself into the black, empty silhouette of the girl walking along the streets of these very vibrant and sophisticated cities.</span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;font-size:85%;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:85%;">The three photos that we chose are indirectly fashion-related (not intentionally.) From left to right: The <strong>New York</strong> photo was taken by BG randomly and if you look really closely, you'll notice the Tom Ford store on Madison. (She'd also like to thank the cab for randomly passing by at that moment. It adds a very NYC element to the picture.) The <strong>L.A. </strong>photo was taken two summers ago on Rodeo Drive. (I love how bright the road signs and Chanel store display is. And strange enough, I like the well-focused rubbish bin too!) The <strong>London</strong> photo was taken this year during Chinese New Year (hence the red lanterns) on Oxford Street. It's sort of a random picture but it's it really representative of London? </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:85%;">I'm not sure whether it was a coincidence or that BG and I were actually inspired by Gossip Girl, but on the night that we finished the design, I had also stared at the opening theme of Gossip Girl (-think city lights and the yellow "Gossip Girl" heading,) and thought, hey, our work-in-progress image looks a bit like this! And if you look at the image from further away, (like 3-5m away,) everything in the image will look almost all black except for the bright blobs of light. The Wet-Dry Technique

Hi ladies,<br /><br />How are we doing today? It's Monday and we have a day off to celebrate Labor Day and boy do I need an extra day to rest. As we all know, I'm a big fan of mineral makeup, especially mineral foundations. MMU is very gentle to my face and also heals my skin from breakouts. However, the number one concern of MMU is its lasting power. Often times, my friends asked me questions like these, "How do you keep your makeup from sliding, Dao?", or "Dao, why my makeup disappear so fast?" Believe me, people give up on MMU because they think and feel like their makeup just vanish from their skins. The ones who stay usually go with traditional makeup on important occasions like weddings and parties.<br /><br />Fear no more, my gorgeous ladies! There's a cure for MMU Houdini and it's called "The Wet-Dry Technique". A quick disclaimer, I do not claim that I invent this technique and I'm sure some other people have already done something similar to what I'm about to show you. However, this technique works very well and I did not look it up online or anything before I started it. You can use whatever type of bowl available. The reason for a swirl bowl is you are going to wet your mineral foundation. Using the cap of your MMU may contaminate your makeup container, resulted in throwing that precious jar of mineral foundation away;<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Your mineral foundation:</span> sprinkle it in the swirl bowl;<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">A latex sponge:</span> wet it with some water before dipping it to your foundation.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">A flat top brush:</span> I use my teddy bear brush that I blogged <a href="http://mymakeupblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/sonia-kashuk-synthetic-blusher-brush-my.html">here</a>. The flat top brush gives a much better coverage than the regular kabuki brush. The best part is your skin feels very fresh and moist, not cakey. Moreover, your complexion actually looks very dewy and natural. I prefer to do it whenever I go to parties and events.
